Trusts & Estates Paralegal

 

Location: Long Island, New York 

Compensation & Benefits: Base salary up to $120,000 plus Bonus, Medical, Dental and Vision benefits, generous vacation and sick/personal days, paid holidays, 401K, and more!

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for all aspects of estate planning and estate and trust and administration

  • Prepare, service and file court papers for probate proceedings, appointments or resignations of fiduciaries, disclaimers, and inventories, and claims against estates

  • Prepare Federal and New York estate tax returns

  • Prepare beneficiary designation forms and asset transfer forms

  • Perform all aspects of insurance trust administration from transfer of policies to trusts, preparation of “crummy” notices, and management of trust bank accounts for payment of premiums

  • Prepare federal estate tax returns and appropriate state estate tax returns

  • Manage client contact information, letters, e-mails, estate planning documents and asset lists

  • Collect and run a valuation of assets, payment of debts and bequests

  • Prepare and file federal and state tax returns

  • Prepare informal estate and trust accounting

  • Prepare receipts and releases

 

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • 5+ years of Trust & Estates experience within a law firm

  • Bachelor's Degree and/or Paralegal Certificate preferred

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work and coordinate for high-profile clients on a regular basis

  • Familiarity with procedures of courts and regulatory agencies required

  • Experience working with tax preparation and accounting software (e.g., OneSource) preferred

  • The ability to work well under pressure and coordinate several activities at once

  • Experience in legal research and locating individuals

  • Ability to draft wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care documents is a plus

  • Notary license is a plus

  • Advanced Microsoft Word and proficiency with Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff

  • Highly adaptable, proactive and works well under pressure

Trust & Estates Paralegal

 

Location New York City, NY - USA - Midtown Manhattan

Summary  The Trust & Estates Paralegal will work in a team environment assisting Trust & Estate attorneys in all phases of the Trust & Estates life-cycle for a Top AM Law Firm noted as "One of the most desired law firms to work for globally".

 

Duties

  • Handle all trust and estate administration

  • Correspond with clients requesting gift information and monitor the status of gift tax returns; prepare gift tax returns

  • Prepare notices of withdrawal rights relating to gift trusts

  • Prepare life insurance forms transferring ownership and change beneficiaries of life insurance policies

  • Assist in all phases of the administration process from the collection of assets to final distribution to the heirs

  • Prepare probate court documents, schedule hearing dates to open and close the estates

  • Order Letters of Office

  • Monitor deadlines and create calendar of key dates by working with docketing to provide e-mail reminders of upcoming deadlines or hearing dates

  • Work with clients and their advisors to obtain asset information and other documentation necessary to prepare estate tax returns

  • Prepare federal estate tax returns and appropriate state estate tax returns

  • Maintain estate administration files and a complete set of the correspondence, memos and administrative documents

  • Manage client contact information, letters, e-mails, estate planning documents and asset lists

  • Maintain an asset list with corresponding dates of death values

  • Assist with the preparation of any documentation necessary for transferring assets

  • Work with real estate and corporate specialists to transfer assets

  • Prepare documentation relating to organizing private foundations as well as preparing annual meeting minutes and annual reports as needed

  • Assist attorneys with the preparation of federal estate tax returns and related filings

  • Play an active role in helping the Firm to provide legal services of the highest caliber to the clients

 

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years of Trust & Estate paralegal experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required

  • Ability to travel and work overtime is required

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a talent for developing rapport with clients, attorneys and co-workers

  • Excellent communication skills

  • The ability to work well under pressure and coordinate several activities at once

  • The initiative to problem-solve

  • The capacity to meet strict deadlines

  • Strong research skills

  • Proficient using computer software and the internet
